Ingredients
4-6 apples (such as Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Gala), peeled, cored, and chopped
1/2 cup water
1-2 tablespoons lemon juice (optional, for a bit of tang and to preserve color)
1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, for flavor)
1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey (optional, for sweetness)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and chop the apples into small pieces.
2. Cook the Apples: In a medium saucepan, combine the apples, water, and lemon juice (if using). Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
3. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the apples simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are very tender and can be easily mashed with a fork.
4. Mash or Blend: For a chunky apple sauce, mash the cooked apples with a fork or potato masher. For a smoother apple sauce, blend the mixture using an immersion blender or transfer to a blender and blend until smooth.
5. Add Flavor (Optional): Stir in the cinnamon and maple syrup or honey, if desired. Adjust sweetness and seasoning to taste.
6. Cool and Store: Let the apple sauce cool to room temperature, then transfer it to a jar or airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze for longer storage.
7. Enjoy!
